I'm going to just come right out and say it: I killed my lavender cutting that I took with me to Davis. It was in a 6 inch pot when it should have been in a 4 inch pot - the soil was holding too much water for the cutting's young roots to absorb; thus, the soil wasn't drying out and allowing oxygen in, so essentially my plant drowned. I was able to find this out because I showed my environmental horticulture (ENH - Davis is big on acronyms) professor pictures of it dying (I'll spare you, they're quite pathetic and sad). He was able to ascertain was happened rather quickly once I described the situation.
On the bright side, my peppermint is doing well. It seems to have some bugs who find it a tasty home, but I also saw a lady bug on it the other day, so I'm sure things will work out. During the day I put it in the pool yard to get some sun ask the one drawback of my dorm room is that none of the windows receive direct sunlight. The indirect light is pretty weak as well.
The gain is that of a new plant! I went to the first Botaniculture Club (both the Botany & Horticulture clubs combined) and I won an Aloe descoingsii in a raffle. It's the smallest aloe there is, and I nicknamed it Desi. Isn't it cute?
I'm thinking I may get more plants soon, but I haven't made up my mind yet. The farmer's market is tomorrow morning, and when I went two weeks ago, there were lavender plants for $2. So we'll see what's available now.
